Mission Statement

The Smith River Rancheria intends to develop appropriate housing opportunities for all Native Americans of Federally Recognized Tribes with preference given to its Smith River Rancheria (SRR) members who reside in Del Norte and Humboldt counties in the State of California and Curry, Coos and Josephine counties in the State of Oregon. These opportunities shall be tailored to meet the needs and circumstances of all Native Americans with preference given to SRR members and shall consist or ownership, rental, and tribally owned units. The Rancheria shall endeavor to expand its land base in order to provide the needed housing opportunities.



Housing Programs:


Rehabilitation Program-
Endeavor to assist tribal member homeowners with grants to repair, renovate or replace those houses that need assistance.

Tribal Rental Programs-
Elder/Handicap Apartments: This program provides six rental units, with rent based on income, for the benefit and well being of our communities elders or handicapped members.
Tribal Rental Units: The Rancheria owns and maintains three single family rental units; The rent is based on the size and quality of the home.

Emergency Assistance Program-
Provides assistance for qualifying medical emergencies, or when damage occurs to tribal members home due to a fire or natural disaster, and results in the displacement of the Tribal Member. In addition Tribal Members who need modifications to there home to accomodate their handicap accessibility needs. Also, relocation assistance is provided for needs due to no fault. Finally, a Tribal Member may receive assistance with rent or mortgage payments due to loss of employment.

Home Ownership Programs-
Down Payment Assistance: The purpose of this program is to provide low-income tribal members expanded opportunities for home ownership by giving a $45,000 down payment plus closing costs up to $5,000. After approval and completion of the Home Buyer Education program, housing department staff shall refer applicants to approved lenders. These lenders shall work directly with the applicant and the housing department staff to determine the purchase price range of a home for which the applicant qualifies. The applicant then shall be responsible for seaching and selecting a home to purchase or build within the given price range.

Housing Improvement Program (HIP)-
HIP provides a grant from the Bureau of Indian Affairs to fund services to repair, renovate and replace or provide housing for the neediest of the needy to Indian families having substandard housing or who are without housing and have no other recourse for assistance.

Loan Guarantee-
The Smith River Rancheria has been approved by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to participate in the HUD Section 184 Loan Guarantee Program.
